Best Career Change 2026: How I Failed My First Attempt and Nailed My Second
May 5, 2026What you will learn: Why applying to 100+ jobs online is a waste of time, the hidden job market (and how to access it), and the exact networking script that landed me interviews.
Stop Spraying and Praying: The Job Search Strategy That Works
After my first batch of 50 online applications yielded exactly zero interviews, I knew something was broken. I had a decent resume. I had relevant skills. But I was playing a numbers game that was rigged against me.
The harsh truth: 80% of jobs are never publicly listed. They are filled through referrals, internal moves, and direct outreach. The jobs you see on LinkedIn are the leftovers. By only applying to public listings, you are fighting for 20% of the opportunities.
I changed my strategy completely. Instead of 50 applications, I sent 30 personalized LinkedIn messages. Instead of covering letters, I wrote brief notes explaining why I admired their work.
The script that worked: “Hi [Name], I have been following your work on [topic]. I am exploring a transition from logistics to marketing, and your career path is exactly what I am aiming for. Would you be open to a 15-minute chat next week?”
12 people responded. 5 agreed to calls. 2 offered to refer me to their HR departments. One of those led to my first marketing job. That job eventually led to my current role.
Online applications are not completely useless, but they should be about 20% of your effort. The other 80% should go to building genuine connections with people in your target field.
